| LAND PROJECT_CHINA 2011 - 2012

Just after the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, Wolfs + Jung relocated their studio from Belgium to China.

Their 4 years of experience living and working in Beijing became the foundation of the LAND PROJECT_CHINA, through which they attempt to capture the zeitgeist of contemporary China. Witnessing in their daily life the ever-changing cycle of the Beijing urban environment - construction, decay, deconstruction- has had an influence on the way they develop work conceptually, aesthetically and also technically.

The project started in 2011 with ‘1 Square Meter 01 [Tabula rasa]’ that contained 1 square meter of land and artifacts, collected from 'a contemporary archeological site' in Beijing, the recently demolished area of Beigao village(Above), with the coordinates 40°00’34, 82”N, 116°30’51, 35”E.

| 1 SQUARE METER_01 [Tabula rasa] 2011

1 Square Meter 01 [Tabula rasa]’ embarks viewers on a travel of its own, inviting viewers to visually and physically experience the land it contains, to recall its past, and to reflect on its present and future. The journeying between reality and imaginary scape is the core function of the object, drawing a reference to the Chinese traditional landscape paintings, exploiting and re-contextualizing the inherent qualities of the old product.

The object contains 1 sqm of land collected from Beijing city, where perennial cycles of change magnify the ever growing and socially compounded living environment. Gazing directly into the land sourced out of an existing location - fronzen in time, viewers are drawn to reflect on its unique story while recalling the cultural meaning of ownership in the contemporary Chinese context.

Chinese property laws allow individuals to be only land tenants while the state retains the ownership; consequently, owning this square meter table transfers full ownership to its user while drawing interesting comparisons with the western emphasis on individuality; reminding us of the different meanings this particular piece of land contains as a product of historical, social, and economic construction.
